Nikitovsky Mercury Mine Plant used to produce mercury by open-cut mining since 1957 till 1995. Today, the plant left a carcass of metallurgical shop, five abandoned mercury mines a depth from 40 to 180 meters, waste dump and closed mercury mine and also high concentration of mercury in soil and water. The site is labelled as the first danger category with regulatory sanitary zone of 1000 m. The regulatory sanitary zone, of course, doesn’t exist and hundred apartment houses locate one kilometer away from the plant.  In spite of some positive dynamics of air quality, the disease incidence of population continues to grow.
