Arnold and mercury
We can still find high levels of mercury in both fresh water fish as well as sea fish. Why is it so? Can we do anything in order to solve this problem? We hope the following game can help you to find a solution as well as further information available on this website. PLAY!
As soon as mercury is released into the environment with the help of bacteria it starts to change into an organic form, e.g. methyl mercury, especially in the water environment. Mercury accumulates in animals’ and human bodies. Then it is transported further in the food chain. Higher levels of food chain are typical for higher concentrations of mercury.
As soon as mercury enters the human organism it becomes a neurotoxin, i.e. it has a negative impact on the nervous system. It poses a danger especially to pregnant women and babies.
Fish analyses, which we have done in years 2008 and 2012 has shown significant levels of mercury also in fish from the Czech rivers.
Activities which cause mercury releases into the environment include for example chemical plants, incinerators, cement factories, electrical industry, and/or thermal power plants etc. Chlor-alkali plant Spolana Neratovice ranks among the largest sources of mercury releases.
New Mercury Convention should prevent further mercury releases into the environment. Representatives of Arnika Association take part in ongoing negotiations of the new treaty which take place in Geneva, Switzerland right this week until Friday, January 18th, 2013.
