During the Soviet Union period, Mangystau was important centre of uranium mining. After the imperium collapsed, surface mines were abandoned and remain untouched till nowadays. The area of the second largest open mine is unfenced and unprotected.

Large area of the uranium mine is hidden from the steppe, although just few dozen kilometres from the city of Aktau.

The area is neither guarded nor fenced.

The mine was exploited for tens of years and reaches depth of several tens meters.

Rainwater creates new river canyons in strange grey coloured soil.

Also the vegetation on the territory of uranium mine plays all colours.

The refuse banks cover the area of more than 20 square kilometres.
