Virtual study tour & discussions: The struggle for healthy rivers in the Czech Republic

18.11.2020 - PRAGUE / CHISINAU

The state of the small rivers in Moldova is pathetic. They suffer from heavy pollution and drying out as a result of overexploitation and unsustainable agriculture. In the Association Agreement with the EU, the country promised to implement the Water Framework Directive and ensure the waters achieved a good status. Can Moldova benefit from the experience of the EU countries?

In the 1980s, the rivers of Czechia belonged among the most polluted in Europe. They were heavily modified as a result of flood protection measures, industrialized agriculture or navigation. Natural wetlands had virtually disappeared. Nowadays, most of the rivers are clean and swimmable and the government wants to restore 200 kilometres of them  by 2023. Flood protection is changing towards environmentally sound measures. How did this shift happen? Can the citizens influence the state of the waters?
