River keepers: "Water has no alternative - electricity production has!"

22.4.2018 - BANJA LUKA (BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA)

At the Earth Day, the Coalition for the Protection of the Rivers of Bosnia and Herzegovina held a working meeting in Banja Luka. The meeting was organized in order to emphasize the importance of the preservation of Bosnia-Herzegovina's rivers. Planned construction of more than 300 hydropower plants threatens to destroy rivers and the dependent communities.

The construction of hydroelectric power plants irreversibly destroys rivers of high quality in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most of these rivers are used for drinking water. Hydropower plants have a negative impact on the living world, climate, and cause even greater social deployment and greed of individuals all at the expense of citizens.

The Coalition for the Protection of the Rivers of Bosnia and Herzegovina gathers 33 members from all over the country who are fighting massive hydroelectric construction. The alternative is to hydropower is improving energy efficiency and the generation of electricity generation from solar and wind power plants.

The Coalition meeting was held with the financial assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic under the Transition Promotion Programme.
